CLAYTON HOTEL

WHERE AND WHY:

The Clayton Hotel Bristol is one of the city’s most exciting new additions. It’s tucked away in the Old City area in what was the old Grade II Everards Printworks.

The beautiful main entrance is framed by a historic Art Nouveau facade featuring iron gates and colourful tiles. It resembles a chapel with its rounded arches and towering turrets. Inside is an impressive lobby with an elegant spiral staircase.

Its 255 rooms are modern and decorated in relaxing muted tones of creams.

ON THE MENU: One of the highlights was Everards Bar and Restaurant named after the building’s original owner.

It’s an airy space with banquettes and parquet floors. On the menu was a sensational chicken satay burger (£16.95) as well as a classic Caesar salad (£10.95) and West Country rump steak (£21.95).

WHILE YOU’RE THERE:

The hotel is in an ideal spot in the heart of Bristol. Nearby are independent bars and restaurants and the historic St Nicholas Market which has been trading since 1743. It sells everything from fresh food to handicrafts, jewellery and clothing.

Bristol’s bar scene is worth exploring and we discovered an atmospheric underground spot called the Beer Emporium with a stained glass roof, and the Left Handed Giant Brewpub which has a games floor featuring pool tables and dart boards.

A must is the Bag of Nails pub, where feline fans will be in heaven as it is home to more than a dozen cats.

It’s a stone’s throw from the bustling King Street, a row of pubs with outdoor seating which has become the centre of any good night out in Bristol.
