Gibson guides City to dramatic title

- PAUL THOMSON

Glasgow City goalkeeper Lee Gibson insists their dramatic last-gasp title win on Sunday in the SWPL is the sweetest of her career.

The Scotland international, who hails from Stewartfield, was involved in an unbelievable finale in the women’s top flight when City, Rangers and Celtic could all have won the title on the final day of the campaign.

City – who had led the way for much of the season but lost back-to-back games against the Old Firm in April – had to travel to Ibrox to face Rangers, while Celtic hosted Hearts. With the Hoops leading 2-0, the trophy was heading to Celtic Park until the dying minutes of the game in Govan when City’s Lauren Davidson scored a stoppage time winner to earn a 16th crown for the club in a 1-0 victory.

It is Gibson’s 10th league title with C ity and the 31-year-old told the BBC: “This is a really sweet one. It’s probably the best one of them all, to lead for so long and have that pressure.

“You have to have that pressure when you are at this club and you’ve got to deliver – and today we have.

“We knew that the Old Firm still had to play each other and someone would drop points, so it was always in our hands.

“So the thing was to make sure we didn’t think of anything outside of this club and focus on what we had to do. We got to the last day and knew we just needed to win.”

The former Calderglen High pupil added: “I would have

liked to have had a more comprehensive win and one that wasn’t so late, but we don’t care how the ball goes in. We are champions again.”
