NHS chiefs’ plea for help to ease pressure

-

NHS Lanarkshire chiefs have issued a plea to the public asking them to help staff alleviate pressures on the health service.

The health board is asking every member of the public to consider all suitable alternatives before coming directly to the emergency department so that staff can continue to provide essential care to those who most need help.

In a statement on its social media sites, NHS Lanarkshire said:“Our emergency departments are extremely busy and our staff are working hard to care for all our patients.

“If you require medical care please contact NHS24 in the first instance. They will be able to advise you of the most appropriate healthcare service for your needs.

“If you do need to attend one of our emergency departments please be aware you may have a long wait. Thank you for your patience at this very busy time.”

Earlier this month, the health board encouraged residents to use their local Minor Injury Unit (MIU) for prompt and efficient care for minor injuries.

There are currently three MIUs in Lanarkshire – at University Hospital Hairmyres, University Hospital Monklands and University Hospital Wishaw – which are open from 9am to 9pm every day.

Dr Gordon McNeish, NHS Lanarkshire’s associate medical director for unscheduled care, revealed:“Minor Injury Units are designed to treat non-life-threatening injuries quickly, ensuring people receive the care they need without overwhelming emergency departments.

“Minor injuries are non-life or limb threatening conditions such as joint sprains, muscle strains, bruises, clean cuts where the bleeding is minimal, burns smaller than the palm of your hand and minor bone breaks or fractures.

“Although most of these injuries can cause pain, they do not tend to lead to serious complications.”
