Connolly:It’s twopoints dropped

-

East Kilbride Thistle boss Aaron Connolly reckons his side deserved more than a 2-2 draw at St Peters in the West of Scotland Fourth Division.

An Adam Edgar double had Jags 2-1 up, before St Peter’s launched a ball upfield in the last minute, resulting in an equaliser.

While Connolly acknowledges that the hosts will feel they earned a point, he says it’s two dropped, and the win could have seen them jump from eighth to fourth in the table.

Connolly said:“I’m really disappointed for the boys, if I’m honest.

“We set up with a game-plan to be attacking and aggressive, and I thought we executed it very well, but unfortunately we’ve been undone by a long ball up the pitch in the 89th minute when we were fairly comfortable in the game.

“We’ve had a couple cleared off the line, had three good chances in the six minutes of added time, and I felt we did enough to win the game, so I’m bitterly disappointed for the players.

“We set up a game-plan, worked on it all week in training and I thought they executed it really well, and but for a long ball forward not being dealt with perfectly by us, we would get three points from the match.

“It feels that we deserved more for our efforts.

“To be fair, St Peter’s never stopped. I thought it was a good, competitive game between two good sides, going at it in the correct manner, and they will feel like a point was justified, potentially.

“I think it was probably a good advert for the league and the quality of football you can get at this level, two good young sides who played attacking football.

“But for us, it’s majorly disappointing, and that’s twice this season that we’ve conceded late goals to St Peter’s and dropped points.

“I feel like we should probably have won both games.”

Jags are eighth in the table, 10 points off leaders Glenvale, but having played four more games, and Connolly felt a win would have made a big difference.

He said:“We spoke prior to the game that a win could put us right into contention, and I don’t think a draw was a disaster, either.

“I think you look at it as a very tight league.

“We’ve played a couple of extra games, but we’ve proven that we’re more than a match for teams at the top end of this table.

“We’ve got to take confidence from the fact that we have won seven out of our last nine games and we’re in good form.

“I’m really proud of what the players have achieved, and I would back them to cause teams problems in any match.”
