A fresh chapter for Green at Gladiators

- ANDY MCGILVRAY

Quade Green says it’s a dream come true to be at Caledonia Gladiators and making the first steps on his European adventure – and plans to put it all in a book one day.

The 25-year-old Philadelphia-born points guard is with Gladiators for the rest of this campaign, having started the season with Mexico’s Halcones Rojos Veracruz, before moving to Venezuela with Centauros de Portuguesa in April.

Green made his debut in an 84-75 win over Surrey Scorchers at PlaySport last Thursday, and played in a 100-93 defeat at Cheshire Phoenix on Sunday, and they’re next in action away to Manchester Giants and London Lions on March 1 and 3.

The American star is delighted to be in East Kilbride and playing in the British Basketball League with Gladiators.

Speaking after making his debut, Green told the News: “A team from overseas needed a point guard, called my agent, my agent called me, and it was a nice situation for me, also.

“This is my first time overseas at a European league, so I’m glad.

“This is my first stepping stone, I can put that in my journey and in my book, one day.

“I love everything about this. This is a dream come true, for me and it’s a good spot.

“Most point guards don’t get to go overseas, and this is a great spot to start off with .

“I’m just proud to have this on my journey and I’ll be proud one day to say I was with this club to start my European career.”

Gladiators are currently third in the BBL, with some big games coming up that will determine whether they secure a play-off spot, and Green hopes to help the team to a successful season.

Green (pictured, right) said: “It wasn’t about the points [on Thursday], we played great as a team.

“I scored, everybody scored, and we played together and won as one.

“We’re going to try and finish second, and the whole goal is to try and win the Championship, that’s what we want to shoot for.

“I love it, so far. My first day was beautiful, meeting the owners and the coaches, everybody that helped to make this the place for the fans.

“The fans bring the juice to the crowd, they bring the juice to the gym, and without them, there would be no juice in there.”

Head coach Gareth Murray was pleased to land Green, who has also played for Maine Celtics and Lakeland Magic in NBA G League.

He said:” It was important to bring in another guard that can distribute and score the ball.

“Quade brings that pure point guard ability. He can handle the ball under pressure and make plays for himself and others.

“Having spent some time in the G-League and South America, he understands what it takes to improve and build towards winning.”
