Ortega’s new role at Gladiators
Caledonia Gladiators women’s head coach Miguel Ortega has expanded his role as the new head of basketball.
While continuing his role with the women’s team, Ortega will oversee all aspects of basketball performance within the East Kilbride club, including initial engagement with young players and steering the strategic direction and operations of the professional teams.
A statement issued by Gladiators read: “Miguel’s expertise in coaching across Europe positions him as an invaluable asset to the Caledonia Gladiators and this transition highlights the club’s commitment to nurturing coaching and playing talent, while guiding them at every stage of their basketball journey.”
Ortega guided Gladiators women to second place in the league during his debut campaign, winning Coach of the Year.
The current season has seen Gladiators make an impressive debut in European competition, while performing well in the women’s BBL.
Ortega said: “I am delighted to take up the position as head of basketball for Caledonia Gladiators, and I am looking forward to helping shape the basketball progress to ensure our club thrives on the court and offers young Scottish players a pathway to play at the highest level.”
The move comes amid news that four Gladiators players are involved in the 2024 British Basketball League All-Star Game at London’s Copper Box Arena on Sunday, March 17.
Clifton Moore Jr is a reserve for the north team, coached by Gladiators boss Gareth Murray, while the north women’s team will feature Kirsty Brown, Laken James and Ariadna Pujol.
