Oliver’s triple into Scottish semi-final

- Osborne. writes Matt

DEREK Oliver skipped Lewis Betts and Mark Johnston to the semi-finals of the Scottish Triples last weekend,

Having already secured his place in the semi-finals of the Scottish Fours, Oliver was looking to welcome new recruit Betts to the fold in style in his triples squad.

An early Saturday-morning extra-end win against Falkirk and afternoon win against Dumbarton would ensure that the trio returned to West Lothian the following day.

A yet-again-fruitful morning saw them progress 20-8 against Coatbridge and into the afternoon against Glasgow.

A strong start to the game saw the East Lothian gents control throughout and they booked their place in the semi-final stage at the end of next month, where they face Turriff.

Elsewhere, the senior squad progressed in the knockout stages of their league campaign last week with a hard-fought victory over Buchan.

A blistering start across the carpet saw the team open a 10-0 lead over their opponents at neutral venue Dundee.

It was to prove a significant number throughout the afternoon, with neither side giving up ground either way.

Three rink wins and a draw were enough to see them progress to the quarter-finals, where they face unbeaten Auchinleck at the tricky prospect of Blantyre Indoor Bowling Club.

Finally, both ladies’ and gents’ pairs head to Abbeyview this weekend in the last of the national playdowns for the 2023/24 season.

Club winners Dee and Kim Hoggan face Bainfield in the 9.30am session, while Kevin Cunningham and Stuart Thomson take on Berwickshire in the same 9.30am start.

Successful mornings would see both pairs return in the 2pm session.
