PL could seal league title on Saturday after victory

Close win keeps Musselburgh’s top-four hopes alive

- Preston Lodge 41 Allan Glen’s 17

PRESTON Lodge moved to within one victory of sealing an immediate return to National League Division Two as they defeated Allan Glen’s on Saturday.

The Prestonpans side were 41-17 winners and know that a triumph against Orkney this weekend could be enough to mean they are crowned champions.

On Saturday, the county side got off to the perfect start as they were awarded a penalty in the opening two minutes.

The ball was worked to Fraser Falgate, who did well under pressure to touch down for the opening try.

The conversion came back off the upright but Preston Lodge had opened up a 5-0 lead.

That advantage was extended on 10 minutes, with Falgate again involved. He collected the ball from Jack Pollard before offloading to Scott Brown, who touched down.

Again, the conversion was missed and for a spell that looked like it could prove costly.

Allan Glen’s scored two converted tries in the space of six minutes to get their noses in front at the halfway stage of the first half.

They then had the chance to extend their lead further with a penalty on 31 minutes but it was off target.

Preston Lodge were back in front before the interval, though, as Jack Gordon dotted down from the back of a maul.

Falgate was on target with the conversion and PL now had a threepoint lead at 17-14.

The visitors missed another penalty just before the break and PL made them pay with a penalty try right on the half-time whistle.

A 24-17 lead at the break gave Preston Lodge the upper hand and they came out for the second half determined to put the game to bed.

A great team move saw the ball worked to Allan Whittingham and he touched down before Falgate added the conversion for a 14-point lead at 31-17.

Falgate was again on target with

a penalty with eight minutes left to extend that advantage further.

There was time for one last score, though, and again it came from Whittingham after good play from the PL forwards.

Preston Lodge top the table by 16 points from Orkney, who do have the benefit of three games in hand.

Victory for the visitors would open the door to overtaking PL at the top of the standings but a win for the Pennypit side would almost certainly wrap up the title.
