LAXMMI Comedy-horror film is devoid of fun or scary moments

- Starring: Akshay Kumar, Kiara Advani, Sharad Kelkar, Rajesh Sharma Director: Raghava Lawrence

THE comedy-horror was supposed to release in cinemas earlier this year, but was prevented from doing so by Covid-19 and recently premiered on streaming site Disney Hotstar.

The Bollywood remake of 2011 Tamil language film Kanchana revolves around a man (Akshay Kumar) who doesn’t believe in ghosts getting possessed by a transgender revenge-seeker, who returns from the dead. The man becomes more effeminate and after initially trying to get rid of the ghost decides to aid in the revenge mission.

This self-indulgent remake of what wasn’t a great film to begin with insults the intelligence of audiences and assaults the senses with the awful over-acting. There are plot-holes in the story you can drive a tank through and moments that just don’t make any sense. It is supposed to be a comedy-horror, but doesn’t really make you laugh and is devoid of any really scary moments. The other problem is Akshay Kumar looks way too old to be starring opposite Kiara Advani and to be playing a role like this.

Laxmii does attempt to tackle some other social issues, but they soon get lost in the headache inducing central story of a man being possessed and subsequently wearing a sari. The one decent song in Laxmii is out of place and sums up the fractured nature of this film. Perhaps, there is a small section of viewers that will find something to like, but most will likely get distracted with something else while it plays or press stop.

It is a wonder the streaming site paid such a high price that was reported for this film because it is difficult to see who will connect with it.

Overall, this is one of the worst movies of 2020 and should be avoided. You have been warned.
