Lilly backs farmers’ stir
COMIC Lilly Singh (right) has lent her support to an ongoing protest in India by local farmers against agriculture bills.
The talk show host has shared a TikTok clip featuring information on the protest across her social media accounts. In recent weeks, India has seen mass demonstrations by farmers who say the country’s new agriculture laws will destroy their livelihoods.
Singh, who is of Punjabi descent, asked her fans to learn about the “largest human protest” in India.
“I’ve been talking a lot about farmers’ protests happening in India... Farmers are protesting new agriculture bills that affect their livelihood and they have been peacefully protesting, but have not met with not so peaceful responses,” Singh said.
“The right to peacefully protest and speak up and not be met with violence is fundamental. We can never, ever lose that. If we lose that anywhere, we all lose a huge part of ourselves as humans everywhere.”
