Series on stand-up comedian is a cheap and awkward rip-off of a popular show

CRITICALLY acclaimed Amazon Prime series The Marvelous Mrs Maisel is a stunning period comedydrama about a newly separated housewife, who has led a sheltered life and decides to pursue a career in stand-up comedy.

Everything about that show, from its costumes, setting and writing to the performances is perfect, so that is why it is an insult to compare that multi-awardwinning show to newly released Netflix serial Bhaag Beanie Bhaag.

Everything about this new six-part Netflix comedy, from the story of a woman who leaves the opportunity of settling down to pursue stand-up comedy to the writing, characters and performances come across as a very cheap rip-off of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. It has lazy writing, overacting that would put Indian soap operas to shame and annoying background music.

Also, a show about standup comedy demands good jokes and an actress with enough charisma to deliver them, but Bhaag Beanie Bhaag has neither. Swara Bhaskar despite being a talented actress is just not suited to the role and looks surprisingly awkward.

In The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, there is a fantastic fictionalised version of legendary comedian Lenny Bruce, who is like a mentor to the aspiring hopeful, but in this co-creator Ravi Patel, who has never really gone beyond small supporting roles, takes up that mantle. He plays a fictionalised version of himself and adds little weight to proceedings. There are some funny moments, but they are few and far between. If this had been a first attempt at this type of show, any flaws could have been forgiven, but trying to replicate a successful show and messing up is unforgivable. The main positive is there are very few episodes of this unbearable series.

Avoid it and watch The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, which has three seasons available on Amazon Prime, instead.
