TRIBHANGA – TEDHI MEDHI CRAZY Engaging drama has multiple layers and emotional shades
A SHORT-TEMPERED actress rushes to the hospital when her estranged mother, an author, falls into a coma. Also, at the emergency room is the fiery film star’s own grown-up, pregnant daughter and a young man writing an autobiography about her mother. As the famous writer lays in the coma, the relationship of three generations of women from the same family begins to emerge.
Through flashback we learn how their lives were fractured in different ways and the wounds they have all been carrying. What emerges is a family image of deep pain, unresolved issues and unexpressed emotions.
The beautifully crafted Bollywood film recently premiered on Netflix. The low-budget drama shows less can definitely be more as an engaging story of human relationships is shown in a simple setting. From various family members to the three women, and the writer who has been tasked with penning an autobiography, the cross-generational story has well-defined characters. That is largely thanks to actress turned writer-director Renuka Shahane, who captures all the emotion and angst really well. The respected actress draws out fine performances from the entire cast.
It is particularly refreshing to see popular Bollywood actress Kajol away from the big commercial blockbusters and in a performance-driven role.
Kunaal Roy Kapur arguably delivers the best performance of his career as the polite writer, trying to heal family wounds.
Despite the relatively short running time of 95-minute time, the story has multiple layers and is filled with various emotional shades. That is why this Bollywood film, which is much better than the title would suggest, is definitely a rewarding watch. It may even make you re-evaluate the relationships you have with your own family members and is far superior to most films that have come out of Hindi cinema in recent years.
