Reversing lockdown

-

IT IS approaching almost a year since the coronavirus crisis in the UK, which saw life as we know it come to a complete stand still.

The majority of schools and workplaces closed to halt the spread of the deadly virus, leaving many people adapting to a new life indoors.

Now in our third national lockdown, strict restrictions on social distancing have become part of our daily routine.

However, there is hope on the horizon. The government unveiled a map out of lockdown for England on Monday (22), with prime minister Boris Johnson voicing optimism that all Covid-19 restrictions in England would end on June 21.

It would see Covid safety measures on large events and performances lifted, as well as the reopening of pubs, restaurants, hotels and cinemas.

Although there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel, we must remain cautious. The relaxation of restrictions does not mean we can ignore the rules. We cannot afford to jeopardise all the hard work and sacrifices that communities all across the country have made over the past 12 months.

Although the roll-out of the vaccination programme is a positive step, the virus is still extremely dangerous and can take lives. We must not put our loved ones at risk, no matter how desperate we are for normality.

By following the current guidelines and taking up the vaccine when it is offered to us, we will come one step closer to the end of the lockdown.
