Left ‘ashamed of British history’

-

BRITAIN’s attorney-general, Suella Braverman, has said the country’s history should be celebrated “despite the left being ashamed and fearful” of it.

Braverman argued that “the ingenuity and the genius of the British people,” should be commended, in an interview with the Telegraph.

She added that her parents, who are from Mauritius and Kenya and emigrated to the UK in the 1960s, didn’t have a bad word to say about their “mother country”.

“I am proud of the British empire. I am informed by the experience of my parents,” Braverman said.

She also explained that in Mauritius, the legal system, the language and some of its educational norms were all heavily influenced by the empire.

“In Kenya, the administration, the civil service, the infrastructure, ports, railways, roads brought by the British – the empire was a force for good,” she added.

While she didn’t deny that “awful things” had gone on in the country’s imperial past, Braverman also took aim at the left for having to apologise for being patriotic. “It’s born out of a left-wing apology for patriotism and an apology for Britain,” she said.

In addition, Braverman said viewing the UK’s migration approach as “cruel and heartless” was not “a fair criticism”.

Braverman praised the “ingenuity and genius of the British people … in terms of what we’ve brought to the world, in terms of language, culture and the industrial revolution”.

She also criticised the BBC, saying the broadcaster had “sour grapes” over Brexit.

“The BBC has a bias towards the EU [European Union]. It works on an assumption that the EU is always right and the UK is always wrong.”
