Praise for climate activists

A YOUNG Asian was among guests who attended a reception for climate campaigners hosted by prime minister Boris Johnson at Downing Street last Tuesday (9).

Aleesha Gadhia, seven, from Nottinghamshire, recently won the Child of Britain Award 2022.

She said, “I am so happy to meet Johnson and I’m so thrilled to be again nominated for this award as I won it in 2020”.

In an interview with Eastern Eye two years ago, Aleesha said she reached out to politicians and companies during the national lockdown to find out what they were doing to tackle deforestation and global warming.

She received responses from naturalist Sir David Attenborough, Johnson and major firms such as Kimberly-Clarke and Douwe Egberts.

“We only have one earth, so we need to look after it,” she had told Eastern Eye.

Johnson said last week, “In these difficult financial times, people are feeling the squeeze across our country... We’re putting £1,200 into the pockets of the eight million most vulnerable households and £400 for everybody to help with the cost of energy, £300 for pensioners, £150 off council tax.”

Other guests at the event included sevenyear-old Tom Hudgel, who had his both legs amputated. He has raised £1 million.

“Tony has already raised £1 million for the hospital that helped, I think, to save your life, Tony. You’ve also instituted Tony’s Law to make sure that people do not suffer the kind of abuse that you suffered so tragically. Thank you, Tony, for coming,” Johnson added.
