Enjoyable Indian-themed show offers more of the same
WEB SERIES Indian Matchmaking became a surprise sleeper hit globally and recently returned for season two on Netflix with Sima Taparia attempting to find more people a potential life partner.
The friendly aunty once again tries to apply traditional Indian methods with young singletons who want to get married, and like before, they have different personalities. We also revisit some of the popular stars from series one, along with following new clients on their quest for love.
The singles going on their respective journeys are combined with the presence of Sima dispensing wisdom and delivering sharp one-liners. She gets family, friends and even a face reader involved.
The main selling point of Indian Matchmaking was Sima, but, unfortunately, her presence seems less important in season two, which focuses more on individuals going through the motions and those close to them. Although there are some quirky singletons who surrender themselves to the expert Indian matchmaker, they are not compelling like Sima. It was also interesting to see updates of those who were there in the first series, including sharp-tongued attorney Aparna Shewakramani.
Fans of season one will find plenty to enjoy with this new series, which has most of the same ingredients and will make it a fun watch for them.
Some may find the show regressive for the methods it uses to introduce single people and it does seem repetitive, without introducing anything new. That doesn’t stop this from being a fast food Indian-themed show that has some spice.
The fact it has been commissioned for a season three by Netflix shows it’s making some sort of connection with audiences despite having flaws.
Hopefully, there will be more of Sima and some romantic success stories in the seasons ahead.
