Elephant in the room

THERE is a statue of a Hindu deity on Rishi Sunak’s desk in 10, Downing Street. From the back I couldn’t make out whether it was the elephant god Ganesh or Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.

Now the Financial Times has resolved the matter: “The prime minister believes in hard work. But he is also trying to make his own luck. On his desk sits a bronze statue of Ganesh, the elephantheaded Hindu god who symbolises new beginnings and is seen as a bringer of good fortune.”
