Beans, peas & mangetout
These climbing vegetables are especially satisfying because they grow so vigorously in such a short time. Not only do they produce delicious morsels but they can brighten up an otherwise plain wall.
It is essential to position sturdy canes or pea sticks in the container alongside the young plants, which will quickly scramble upwards. You can create a basic frame by tying together a few bamboo sticks. And use large, heavy containers because plants with a good crop can become top-heavy.
Growing tip
Pick the pods regularly when they are young and tender, never allowing them to fully ripen, to promote more flowers.
