Easy Gardens

Weekend project

plant an edible tub

Give new life to an old tub, barrel or wooden box and create your very own miniature kitchen garden. An old wash tub with drilled drainage holes works well. Just be aware that the metal absorbs heat and risks scorching roots, so shade the sides with trailing crops or keep it shaded by other containers.

You will need:

■ A large container with drainage holes ■ Plenty of soil to fill the container

■ Tomato plants

■ Spring onion and lettuce seeds

■ Chrysanthemum plants (optional)

1Fill the container with soil and plant your tomato plants first. (You can sow these from seed, but this will take a couple of weeks.) Ensure you keep 20cm clear around each plant when positioning them.

2Spring onion and lettuce seeds can be planted in the gaps. When doing this, refer to the back of the seed packet for details.

3In any remaining space you can add ready-grown edible flowers such as chrysanthemums.
