What’ s a good screening plant?
I’ve moved into a new house and want to turn my garden into a peaceful oasis. What’s a good fastgrowing shrub for privacy as my garden is very overlooked?

advise people not to plant something that’s going to rocket up really quickly, as there are better ways to add privacy and create a beautiful garden at the same time. i would try and create secluded areas within your garden, especially around seating areas close to
Qthe house. i like to plant small trees or shrubs around seating, so they don’t overpower the garden, but equally when you sit down they add enough privacy.
A couple of my favourites are cornus mas (cornelian cherry) and Amelanchier lamarckii (snowy mespilus). they both make lovely shapes when grown as multi-stem trees and have more than one season of interest. i’ll be sharing lots more of my favourite plants at BBC Gardeners’ World live this year.
