Are there any general rules to follow when deciding which plants to put together? From a design and practical point of view.

much on flower colour and forget that plants have amazing leaf texture, form and shape too. Plus stems, seedheads and berries can add lots of extra seasonal interest. So i would think about how the plant looks when it is not flowering as much as when it is.
