Easy Gardens

How do you create the perfect garden for children?

-

Q My kids are getting old enough to explore the garden properly. I’d like it to be intriguing but child-safe so they enjoy playing while getting interested in plants and wildlife.

A Soft planting with fragrance and colour will entice them out, and if you use nectar-rich plants, you’ll attract bees, butterflies and all manner of insects. Insect hotels and bird feeders in fun designs will also encourage wildlife, which will hopefully interest them.

Avoid raised beds or steps with sharp edges in case of falls, and don’t build a pond or water feature at ground level. Go instead for a cascade that drops onto a grate covered with pebbles – it’ll be far safer.

Encourage them to plant their own flowers. My father helped me sow sweet peas on my own little patch, which certainly caught my interest!
