Tips for raised beds
■ Raised beds place another hurdle in the way of slugs and snails, and are a good environment for growing companion plants, an organic method of deterring particular pests.
■ Plan pest deterrents prior to planting, checking plants regularly thereafter, quickly removing and burning damaged leaves. Try the following combinations of edible and companion plants:
■ French marigolds planted along pathways release a pungent smell that confuses pests.
■ Parsley or chives effectively lure greenfly away from tomato plants.
■ The smell of carrots is masked by strong-smelling onions, leeks or garlic, deterring carrot root fly.
■ Broad beans planted alongside summer savory are less likely to be attacked by black aphids.
■ Nasturtiums sown alongside brassicas act as a sacrificial plant by diverting hungry aphids.
■ Dot evergreen, hardy herbs, such as lavender, thyme, rosemary and sage among potager beds. Their flowers will attract welcome pollinators, while their aromas will actively discourage pests.
