MAY pruning guide
Shrubs
It’s now safe to prune tender shrubs, such as fuchsias, penstemons and caryopteris to promote strong new growth. Evergreen shrubs, such as holly, privet and pyracantha can be pruned now but first check in case there are nesting birds.
Fragrant jasmine
Prune Winter Jasmine after flowering, cutting back flowered side shoots lower down. Tie in new growths for next year’s flowers.
early clematis
Prune early-flowering clematis (C. montana, alpina, cirrhosa and macropetala) after flowering, to keep long growths in check and remove diseased or damaged stems. Cut to a pair of healthy buds.
