Top jobs for JUNE

Hanging baskets and containers can be put out in early June (in cold regions). Pinch out flower buds initially so that plants divert energy into putting down roots, to improve flowering in the long term and use liquid feed fortnightly. 2 Sow perennials, such as lupins and delphiniums, for flowers next year. Sow into pots of multipurpose compost and place at the base of a sheltered wall or cold frame. Keep plants watered well during dry spells. 3 Sweet peas require plenty of feed and water. When plants start to bloom, pick frequently to promote more flowers.

Feed camellias, azaleas and rhododendrons, and other lime-hating plants including blueberries, pieris and heathers, with a feed specially formulated for ericaceous plants. Dilute into a can of water and soak soil every 14 days in summer and spring, following the manufacturers’ instructions.

Box hedging can be pruned in early June to take back new growth and retain a neat shape. Trimming can be done any time until August. 6 Tackle weeds and moss in the lawn with treatment only if growth is vigorous. Mowing lawns weekly thickens grass plants and helps crowd out weeds. Aim to cut no more than a third of its height each time.

Feed strawberry plants every seven to 14 days with a liquid tomato feed. It’s best to water from the base to prevent rot in the crown and fruit. Reduce watering as fruits set for a better flavour.

Continue to provide support for tall flowering perennials using twiggy sticks or canes and twine. 9 Once daffodil leaves have died off, you can dig up and relocate any new bulbs to prevent overcrowding next year and spread the colour.

Protect soft fruit, such as strawberries and raspberries, from the birds before they are attracted by the colour and eat them. Cover fruit with netting, cloches or caging.
