Don’t be put off by the fact that you need a drill for this as it’s straightforward to make and will be a great introduction to using power tools for future DIY projects
Bird house
1 using a ruler (or set square) and pencil, mark out the cut lines on your piece of wooden board, using the measurements as shown in diagram A. 2 Fix the plank firmly to the table with clamps and saw along the lines you have drawn. Sand the edges of the newly cut wood with sandpaper to keep them smooth. Mark each piece as you go so you don’t mix up which is which. 3 to make the hole for the birds to enter, mark the position referring to diagram B on the front piece. Attach your hole saw drill bit to the drill and fix the front piece to the work surface with clamps. Place the drill bit over the hole marked and drill the hole. 4 Sand the edge of the entrance hole using sandpaper to keep it nice and smooth. We don’t want the birds to get any splinters! 5 Arrange the pieces of wooden board as in diagram C, with the 25cm lengths of the sides at the back, and secure them firmly with clamps.
6 Now it’s time to nail the pieces together. Hammer the nails in along the sides of the front, back and floor, fixing the pieces in place. 7 Mark the exact positioning of the drill holes on the roof piece and drill the holes for the screws. 8 Attach the electric screwdriver function to the drill and use it to fix the roof of the bird house firmly in place. 9 Give it a going over with the sandpaper and it’s ready to paint. Apply as many layers as necessary in a well-ventilated area and leave it to dry completely. 10 Paint your back board the same colour as the bird house, then attach it to the back of the bird house with your electric screwdriver as before (refer to diagram D). Drill the back board on to your chosen surface, such as a fence or shed.
