MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

■ Wooden crate painted pink – or your favourite colour

■ Plastic liner

■ Strips of hessian

■ Potting compost

■ Staple gun

■ Secateurs or scissors PLANTS

■ Argyranthemum

‘Percussion Rose’

■ Bacopas ‘Abunda Pink’

■ Scopia ‘Double Ballerina Pink’

■ Ajuga ‘Burgundy Glow’

1 Place the plastic liner inside the wooden container, ensuring it fits inside – arrange it in such a way that it isn’t visible from outside the box.

2 Hessian strips will look more attractive and hide the liner from view. Using a staple gun, attach lengths of hessian to the sides of the wooden box, leaving the tops unattached at until you have planted the trailing plants through the gaps in the container. These strips will also help to hold the plastic lining in place.

3 Use your secateurs or scissors to snip drainage holes into the bottom of the plastic liner.

4 Fill the box with compost about halfway to the top, to just below the bottom of the gaps in the sides.

5 Plant the Scopia ‘Double Ballerina Pink’ through gaps in the side of your container.

6 Secure the side strip of hessian now that the Scopia ‘Double Ballerina Pink’ has been planted.

7 Arrange the other plants: Argyranthemum ‘Percussion Rose’, Ajuga ‘Burgundy Glow’ and Bacopas ‘Abunda Pink’ in the main body of the tub and top up with compost.

8 Water plants well and place the container in a sheltered, sunny spot. Regularly deadhead your Argyranthemum ‘Percussion Rose’ to ensure a succession of new blooms.
