TOP TIPS FOR GROWING EXOTIC PLANTS
■ Plant in the warmest part of the garden, somewhere that’s sheltered from cold winds.
■ South- and west-facing walls absorb daytime heat and emit it at night, creating a more even temperature that these plants will appreciate.
■ Incorporate plenty of compost into the soil when planting out.
■ Large, leafy exotics need lots of water – mulch after watering to retain moisture in the soil.
■ Feed large flowering plants like dahlias and cannas every couple of weeks; use a tomato or comfrey fertiliser.
