Tactile ornamental grasses are best appreciated when grown in containers and positioned within fondling reach of a chair. However, do check their needs before confining them to a pot. Some grasses have a tendency to soak up all the available water before other plants can get their share, so are best planted on their own.
Soft and cuddly is the African love grass or Eragrostis curvula ‘Totnes Burgundy’, which produces a beautiful mound of arching leaves that turn wine-red as they mature. In early autumn, masses of grey, nodding flower spikes transform the plant, so find it a pedestal and give it pride of place.
