Checklist for choosing garden buildings
■ Identify the purpose of your building – utilitarian, decorative or a mixture
■ For large buildings, check whether planning permission is required.
■ Plan suitable access, depending on whether it is for frequent or occasional use.
■ Select a suitable site to position it, considering aspect, ease of access and the neighbours.
■ Using canes and string, mark out the area it will occupy.
■ If a seating area is planned, mark it out, testing exposure to sun and wind.
■ View the proposed site from the house and vice versa.
■ Examine possible buildings, assessing both their durability and maintenance needs.
■ Discuss your plans with neighbours who may be affected, however slightly.
