TOP DIY BUILD TIPS
Sheds, arbours and pergolas need to be properly installed and whereas small, light structures can be sited on firm, levelled gravel or paving, more substantial structures require a concrete base laid above a well-compacted hardcore sub-base.
For buildings that will serve to give a higher level of comfort, for instance for guests to sleep in, electricity or even a concrete-base water supply may be installed, permission will need to be sought from your local planning authority.
To install a substantial garden building on a concrete base, you will need to:
■ Mark out the building’s base with pegs and string
■ If a dining area is planned, ensure it is at least 4m square
■ Build any paths at the same time
■ Clear, level and excavate the site to about 20cm, saving good topsoil
■ Lay a 12cm-deep hardcore sub-base, compacting to prevent settlement
■ Create removable wooden framework around area to be concreted
■ Pour an 8cm depth of concrete and double-check it’s level
■ If concrete extends more than 5m in any direction, insert thermal movement joints
■ Remove wooden frame once concrete is set and leave for at least five days to set before erecting building
■ Decide whether the concrete seating area should be simply textured or inlaid with stone, brick or pebble
