Tips for the best window boxes

-

Position the window box before filling, in order to make sure it fits in your chosen space. Check it’s deep enough so that it won’t topple off. Also, think of the height the plants might reach and the height of your window, as you don’t want to block out too much daylight.

Non-plastic containers need a lining or plastic insert for easy management.

Use multipurpose or peat-free compost as it’s lighter. Leave 2.5cm (1in) at the tops of containers to allow for watering.

When planting, add a controlled-release fertiliser to compost and feed weekly in summer. Give veg crops all-purpose liquid feed and fruiting plants tomato fertiliser to promote flowers and plump fruit.

Add water-retaining gel to compost when planting, and consider an automatic irrigation kit.

Top-dress compost with a mulch of grit or stones to conserve moisture.

Avoid drip trays, which cause waterlogging. Instead, raise window boxes up on feet. Drainage holes should be about 15cm (6in) apart and a layer of crocks added before planting.

Make regular checks for pest damage. Early infestations of aphids must be removed early. If blooms are nibbled, trap culprit earwigs in small upturned flower pots filled with straw, placed on short bamboo canes. Copper tape is excellent for repelling snails.

Use a spray head or rose attachment for watering, and allow water to soak in thoroughly a few times to ensure it reaches the base.

On a bare wall, create a window ‘cameo’ by mounting a salvaged door with a large mirror, then placing a cradle planter beneath.
