The basics
The secret of creating outdoor play areas lies in seeing the garden through a child’s eyes, and providing different spaces for activity and creativity.
Every garden offers potential for outdoor recreation, provided there is some shade, but the smaller the plot, the harder it is to achieve a balance between areas for the rough and tumble of play, and child-free zones where frazzled parents can relax. Safety is a primary consideration, but to remove every potential hazard creates a sterile environment so, as children mature, risk factors should be regularly assessed. While toddlers must be kept in view, older children can be allowed hideouts where they can play unsupervised.
