Layering

-

This technique works well with climbers, such as clematis, jasmine and wisteria, and shrubs, such as camellia, acer and rhododendron.

■ New plants can be made by gently bending a shoot and pinning it into a pot of soil with a U-shaped wire (try manipulating a paper clip to do this).

■ Make sloping cut with a knife at the tip of the shoot. This will speed up root production.

■ Place a low mound of soil over the pinned-down shoots and wait until the root develops before severing the original root.
