Tiny trees
Q I want to plant a small tree that will grow no taller than 2m. Any recommendations? We have clay soil and a sunny garden. A Clay soils are generally rich in nutrients and hold water well, but they’re difficult to cultivate and slow to warm up. However they’re fine for most trees. Japanese maples are a good all-round choice. With lots of different colour forms and leaf shapes. Try rowans like Sorbus ‘Joseph Rock’, that has white flowers in spring and orangeyellow berries in autumn. Or an ornamental cherry, again with spring flowers and good autumn colour.
