JULY

Tomatoes

Trusses will be maturing nicely, ready to pick when fully ripe. Check fruits for signs of splitting and blossom end rot. If found, remove and ensure consistent watering to prevent damage. Feed with Tomorite once a week. Courgettes

Harvest summer squashes and courgettes while young (10cm) for the best flavour. Cut off with a knife or secateurs to prevent damaging the plant, and use immediately or store in the fridge for a few days.

AUGUST

Runner beans

Pods are forming so keep picking while they’re young. Pinch out the leaders shoots as plants reach the top of the supports, water and give a liquid feed.

Autumn raspberries

Keep an eye on them and start picking from mid August. If berries are slow to develop, give plants a good weekly soaking.

Apples

Start picking early maturing apples, such as ‘Discovery’.

Eat now or store in the salad drawer to keep fresh.
