Homes for insects

■ Try building an insect house, from left-over bricks, wooden offcuts, straw and twigs gathered from nearby park or wood. ■ Create a haven for solitary bees from a discarded section of plastic pipe filled with short lengths of cane.

■ Any undisturbed spot is ideal for establishing piles of leaves, or logs, for beetles, worms and hedgehogs.
