Pick ’n’ mix
Instead of one big pot, you could buy a selection of small pots to contain three or four crocuses. These will be perfect for a narrow ledge like the one pictured. Stationed on a brick wall you can arrange smaller pots to sit around a corner, which can’t be achieved with larger pots.
What you will need
• 5 small terracotta pots
• Mixed crocuses (three per pot)
• Potting compost • Fine gravel
■ Crocus bulbs need to be planted in the autumn, but you should be able to find ready-grown bulbs that can be transplanted into your terracotta pots and filled up with compost. ■ Sprinkle the gravel carefully on top. This is to prevent rain splashing up and damaging the delicate flowers.
