■ Glass storage jar with a cork lid, approx 30cm high
■ Activated charcoal

EQUIPMENT

5 Using the paintbrush, clean any soil off the sides of the jar.
6 Plant the leafy Calathea and trim back taller leaves to ensure they don’t touch the sides or top of the jar.
3 Sprinkle activated charcoal onto the gravel – this keeps toxins from developing.
4 Carefully pour over a 5-7cm layer of houseplant compost.
1 Pour a 1cm layer of alpine gravel into the base of the jar.
2 Using the cork attached to a stick, level the gravel.
10 Add the quartz and pebbles, brush away any excess soil, then water lightly before replacing the lid.
7 Next add the red-leaved Calathea rufibarba, Fittonia verschaffeltii and ivy.
8 Using the cork-topped stick again, firm each plant in place.
9 Break the cushion moss up into pieces to fit around the plants.
