Jewels of summer
Expensive to buy in the supermarket during summer, red-, pink- or whitecurrants are very easy to grow. Choose from Whitecurrant ‘White Versailles’, a lovely variety to eat fresh; Redcurrant ‘Rovada’, ideal for jellies and syrups, or Pinkcurrant ‘Rosa Sport’, which bears glistening pearl fruits with a floral, aromatic, sweet flavour. Choose a sunny or semi-shaded spot and grow in free-draining soil, prepared well by adding rotted manure or compost.
Plant a couple of inches deeper than it was originally growing in the pot.
