Easy Gardens

Need for feed?

-

■ Many established ornamental trees, shrubs and other border plants can get everything they need from the soil and don’t need feeding. ■ If your plants aren’t thriving, there may be other factors to check before you start with fertilisers.

■ First of all, make sure you buy the right plants for your soil and grow them in appropriate conditions.

All the care (and plant food) in the world won’t make a camellia grow well on chalk or a shade-loving plant thrive in full sun.

Test soil nutrients around the garden. If anything is lacking, give it a boost with the appropriate nutrient.

Also check for pests and disease, including around the roots. If you find anything untoward, seek advice and deal with it immediately.
