● Keep your layout simple, so planting can shine. Include evergreens for winter – cover an arch with ivy, topiary and shrubs like choisya.

● A fruit tree is a must-have, for spring blossom, autumn colour and fruit. Add flowering shrubs – lilac and peonies for early summer and hydrangeas to follow on.

● Combine flowering plants with herbs like rosemary and chives. Pop decorative veg like beetroot ‘Bull’s Blood’ into the border too.
