What you will need

■ An existing deckchair

■ Rust-oleum gloss spray paint in Sun Yellow, £11 for 400ml, B&Q

■ 2m deckchair canvas (similar from myfabrics. co.uk for £4.55 per meter)

■ Scissors and pins

■ 2 x 70cm ribbon (£1 for 15m, Hobbycraft)

1 Remove the sling. Spray the frame with a coat of paint, then another when dry. Lay the new fabric flat on the floor and place the old sling on top. Cut to size, adding extra at either end to fold over, plus a seam allowance of 1.5cm. Fold and stitch each short edge to make a channel. Thread the dowels through.

2 To make the cushion, cut 40cm of fabric. Fold ribbons in half and place fold at cut edge of the fabric, 7cm in. Pin in place. Fold fabric in half and stitch edges together with a 1.5cm seam allowance. Turn right side out. Stitch one side closed and use the cushion’s stuffing to fill. Stitch closed. Tie ribbons to chair.
