Narrow spaces

-

Q I have an outside space that is about 3ft by 15ft, all concreted, and sheltered by a 5ft wall, but room for pots or small trough. I’ve not grown anything there before, do you have any suggestions?

A When it comes to herbs, try basil, rosemary and mint. All respond well to continuous harvesting and grow well when trimmed. Salad leaves are great for a shallow trough, while spinach and kale grow well in partial shade. Growing fruit in sheltered areas is tricky, and may not yield the best produce. Ensure you have decent pots with adequate drainage, and fill with gritty potting soil (peat-free). Pick leaves regularly during the growing season, water without giving them soggy bottoms, and feed occasionally with a fertiliser.
