● The main seating area is usually located next to the house on a terrace or patio, therefore it makes sense that the style, scale and materials complement the character of the house.

● When deciding on the size, do not be overly restrained. An attractive, functional garden needs a good-sized dining and seating area.

● The floor area should be proportional to your garden and determined by the number of people you wish to accommodate.

● Work out the area required for the garden furniture you want and leave ample space for circulating. Don’t forget to also leave room for pot plants to perk up the space.

● If you plan on entertaining in big numbers, choose the biggest table you can afford that is a reasonable fit in the space. Striking balance is key. Acres of paving or decking will end up looking uninviting and somewhere too small will simply look cluttered.
