Saints are playing well but need more goals, says Levein
St Johnstone manager Craig Levein wants his team to “keep grinding away” while looking to create more chances.
Saints secured a 1-0 win at Ross County on Saturday to make it four cinch Premiership games unbeaten.
Levein’s side have not scored more than one goal in a game since his debut 2-2 draw against Motherwell three months ago. A first Saints goal for pacey striker Benjamin Kimpioka in Dingwall, a debut for Adama Sidibeh and the return to fitness of Nicky Clark has given Levein fresh options up front.
But he knows they have to maintain their defensive discipline that has seen them limit their opponents to three goals in four league games when they host Hearts tonight.
Looking back to Saturday, Levein said: “The three points was the most important thing. We did what we usually do – we worked extremely hard and defended well.
“We have played some really good football at times. My challenge is to increase the amount of times that we do that
“For us it’s about converting our good play into chances and goals. That’s the part of our team we need to up, the amount of chances we get, whilst at the same time making sure we stay secure at the back.”
Saturday’s win left the Perth side two points off the top six but Levein is not starting to get ahead of himself.
“Any time you take your eye off the ball you’re in trouble,” he said. “So we just need to keep grinding away and continue with the same defensive performances, and increase our efforts at goal and the number of goals. That’s the next challenge.”
