‘Memories to be made in the summer holiday’

-

The Nuffield Foundation report suggesting a cut in the length of the school summer holidays did not find favour with all our readers.

In fact, a majority of comments on our Facebook page wanted to keep the status quo, rather than adding a week each to the October and February half-terms.

Debbi Lynch posted: “Time is precious and the six weeks goes in so quickly, once time has passed you can never get it back. Making beautiful lasting memories in life is so important. Kids need the time to recharge too.”

Sam Hollingworth agreed, posting: “I’d rather have the six weeks in the summer – kids grow up fast, so every day off in the summer is a memory made to remember forever.”

Sam Evans wrote: “Six weeks is needed. Unless you have worked in a school you won’t understand why. A lot of teachers are in during the summer preparing for the new class. All schools go through a deep clean during summer, as well as any decorating that needs doing and repairs that can’t always be done during term time.

“I love the six weeks as it means all my kids get to make memories together and have a much earned break between the different years.”

Janet Jones added: “I think the teachers need that six-week break. They don’t sit around and go holidaying. They also have to think of work for the new school year AND have families too. Don’t try to undo what has been a holiday break for so many people for so long.”

Ailsa Mcgowan reminisced: “Leave it at six weeks – we all loved having the summer holidays off to spend time with our friends having fun and, well, just being children.”

And Kaliegh Jordan added: “Six weeks is better. Kids need time to be kids, was my favourite part about being a child, summer holidays.”
