Rallying call to join national campaign to tackle litter emergency
Residents in the Capital are being urged to take part in a national campaign to tackle the country’s litter emergency.
Edinburgh City Council is backing environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful as it rallies support for its annual Spring Clean, taking place this year between March 15 and April 28.
The #SpringClean Scotland 2024 mass litter pick aims to bring together people from across Scotland to help improve their local environment.
Last year more than 30,000 rolled up their sleeves and – equipped with litter pickers, bags and gloves – made a positive difference to their own neighbourhoods.
This year, the charity wants more people to get involved and contribute to an even bigger national response.
Barry Fisher, Chief Executive at Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “We’re so excited for #SpringCleanScotland 2024 to begin this week, and it would be fantastic for as many people as possible from Edinburgh to get involved.
“We know 85 per cent of people agree that they want to see more efforts to prevent litter in their area. It starts with us.
“No longer can we wait for someone else to pick up the litter we might walk past every day – so we are inviting everyone to organise a litter pick with friends, family, workmates or alone, or to join an event registered on our Clean Up Scotland map.
“Every action, however small, will help us reverse the litter emergency.”
Councillor Scott Arthur, Environment Convener at Edinburgh Council, said: “I’d like to thank all of the teams and individuals who are already helping us to keep our beautiful capital city clean and tidy. It’s important that we all take pride in our local communities and I know how much many of us love spending time in and enjoying our parks and other open spaces.
"So, if you have the time and are able to please go to the litter and fly tipping section of our website where you can find out how to organise a litter pick or report litter/ flytipping in your area. It would be great if as many people as people from Edinburgh can help us to support Keep Scotland Beautiful with this national campaign.”
Keep Scotland Beautiful is working in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy and Keep Wales Tidy to support the Great British Spring Clean.
