A driver who seriously injured a cyclist on Dalkeith Road has been convicted of careless driving

In these unfortunate circumstances, you have two road users having a regrettable accident but only one party has insurance. I know that's the way it is and it's not likely to change, but it doesn't seem OK for only motorised road users to require insurance or culpability.

I feel sorry for both. I drive this road every week, this doesn’t surprise me. It’s full of potholes for drivers and cyclists. What the council call “cycle lanes” is in complete disarray. But it surprises me that there’s a cycle lane from Dalkeith to Sheriffhall Park and Ride yet they decide to use the main road among the heavy traffic, even taking the main roundabout, just like any car. This is proof that the infrastructure is to blame. Ricardo Alves

The number of folk who struggle to ride bikes and don't know the highway code in and around Edinburgh is more than bad drivers. I drive everyday into and around Edinburgh. Cyclists need insurance and need to be made to do a basic course on riding safely that covers not jumping red lights and not on and off footpaths, no overtaking cars.

I travel in town everyday and cyclists prefer road dodging in and out of traffic rather than using a cycle lane.

When I was a kid I cycled everywhere on the roads from a fairly young age. To school, the paper round, to see friends and for fun, it’s how we had to get about. Cyclists should be on the road, cyclists and drivers just have to be tolerant towards each other. But everyone thinks they have more right than anyone else. Raymond Skutecki
