Quarter of school kids using AI to do homework – study

-

A quarter of children are now using artificial intelligence tools to help with schoolwork, a new study claims.

Research by online safety charity Internet Matters found that over half of 13- to-14-yearolds were actively engaging with AI chatbots, and that 41 per cent AI tools will be beneficial to their education.

The charity has called on the Department for Education to provide more advice and support to schools to help teachers, parents and pupils benefit from AI tools and understand the potential benefits, limitations and safely issues.

Internet Matters co-chief executive Carolyn Bunting said: “Generative AI is here to stay, with a quarter of all children now using generative tools to help with schoolwork.

“With just a few prompts, an entire essay can be crafted and it is clear more support, guidance and training is needed urgently – not least on how AI will impact the nature of their education, exams, teaching and homework.”

Simone Vibert, head of policy research at Internet Matters, warned the use of AI among those of school age should “ring alarm bells”.

She said: “This technology has grown at warp speed over a short space of time and is really hitting schools now. Our research shows many pupils are now using it. AI has brought about a rapid and massive revolution in how education can and is being delivered.

“There is no national guidance and most schools do not have any guidance. Most schools are not even having conversations with parents or pupils about what they can and can’t do with these tools."
